Good start by Windies

GEORGETOWN, MARCH 9. West Indies was 101 for one at lunch after deciding to bat, on the first day of the first Test against South Africa here on Friday.

Chris Gayle (48) and Marlon Samuels (31) were at the crease. The batsman out was Wavell Hinds for 13, the wicket going to Shaun Pollock.

New captain Carl Hooper won the toss and decided to bat. The pitch looked ideal for batting, rolled hard and dry with no sign of green grass. The weather was warm with a light breeze.

The teams:

West Indies: Carl Hooper (Capt.), Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Marlon Samuels, Ridley Jacobs, Nixon McLean, Mervyn Dillon, Dinanath Ramnarine, Courtney Walsh and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (12th man).

South Africa: Shaun Pollock (Capt.), Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Neil McKenzie, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Nicky Boje, Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini and Boeta Dippenaar (12th man).

Umpires: John Hampshire (England), Ed Nicholls (West Indies). Third umpire: Colin Alfred (West Indies). Match Referee: Mike Denness (England).
