NEW DELHI, MARCH 9.

The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Omar Abdullah, today said that to ensure greater value addition in exports the role of packaging was of paramount importance.

Inaugurating a six-day ``Printpack India 2001'' exhibition, being organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in association with Indian Printing, Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers Association (IPAMA) at Pragati Maidan here, Mr. Abdullah said this sector played an important role in India's economy and exports.

Appreciating the concept of the exhibition, Mr. Abdullah said: ``Printpack India 2001 showcases effectively the state of health in the printing and packaging sector, within the country and abroad, and the prospects of their further modernisation and technological upgradation, particularly in the domestic context.''

He urged the industry, which gives employment to over 2.5 lakh people, to be in touch with all modern developments in the area of packaging, especially in processed foods so that its shelf life could be enhanced besides addressing health concerns of consumers.

The Minister hoped that the exhibition, in which 375 Indian as well as international companies are participating, would facilitate business interactions among Indian and global partners to take this sector to new heights.

The ITPO Executive Director, Mr. K. T. Chacko, and the IPAMA president, Mr. S. M. Shah, were present.
