Lift scheme at Dummugudem soon, says Naidu
By Our Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM, MARCH 10. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu,
said Friday that a lift irrigation scheme would be constructed at
Dummugudem at a cost of Rs 500 crores as the first step in the
direction of utilising Godavari river waters for the development
of Telangana region.
Addressing a rally of the Telugu Desam Party after inaugurating
the newly-constructed building of the district unit here, Mr.
Naidu said the Government could give roads and schools to people
in the region. But they needed water also. The Godavari river
holds hope for region.
He said the lift scheme at Dummugudem would help irrigate over
one lakh acres. ``We will achieve it,''he said. He said the
Government would give funds for the construction of the much
talked about the Tularam project in Khammam district for which
forest clearance was obtained only recently. The Government made
efforts for the forest clearance of the Polaram project also.
He said that the TDP which had been functioning in the district
since its inception could construct its own building with all
facilities. Good buildings had come up for the district offices
of the party in Nalgonda, West Godavari and Guntur also. He said
the occasion called for working with renewed commitment for the
uplift of the weaker sections.
The party had never strayed from development of the weaker
sections -- the basic objective with which it had come into
existence under the leadership of N. T. Rama Rao. Many of the
programmes of the Telugu Desam Government owed to the inspiration
given by the founder president.
The party could take pride from the fact that it had genuine
cadre with sincerity and commitment for the cause of the poor in
its fold. Many the cadre who joined the party were new to
politics and they were unlike those who sought use politics for
money-making.
Mr. Naidu observed that the Telugu Desam was only party which
could give due recognition to the cadre in the organisation. It
had over 12 lakh active workers and all of them would be issued
identity cards before the Mahanadu in May. The organisational
elections at the district level would be held in April.
The village and booth-level election exercise had already been
completed. The party had been utilising its workers and
functionaries for constructive activities. They were never
allowed to indulge in political violence. The performance of
party functionaries was being evaluated by computerising their
records.
He noted that over 60 lakh people were enumerated for the Akshara
Sankranti programme and 40 lakh of them could be made literate in
a very short span of time. He stated that it was a commendable
exercise involving least expenditure. The Government sought to
extend the possible help to the peasant community and stood
behind it in the hour of distress.
Inaugurating a comprehensive protected water supply scheme at
Ramagovindapuram village in Sathupalli mandal, the Chief Minister
said that every village in the State would be developed as a
model village.
The Minister for Prohibition and Excise, Mr. Tummala Nageswara
Rao, the district incharge Minister, Mrs. Pushpa Leela, the
district convener of the party, Mr. T. Venkateswar Rao, the
Madhira MLA, Mr. Kondabala Koteswara Rao were among those that
were on the dais.
