Govt. to curb sale of illicit liquor

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, MARCH 13. The Home Minister, Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, told the Legislative Assembly today that stringent action would be taken against the illegal manufacture and sale of toddy in the State.

Replying to Mr. M. Bhaktavatchalam (AIADMK) during Question Hour, Mr. Kharge said the sale of toddy was prohibited in the State except in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Gulbarga and Raichur districts.

He assured the members that instructions had been given to the police and excise officials to deal firmly with those who manufactured illicit liquor and to keep a vigil, especially in areas where poor people lived and also in rural pockets where the illegal liquor was sold.

He was responding to a plea made by Mr. Sadananda Gowda and Mr. Hanume Gowda (BJP), and Mr. B.N. Bachche Gowda (JD- U), who said that effective steps were not being taken to prevent the sale of illicit liquor. This had resulted in the availability of spurious liquor which was affecting the health of the poor.

Mr. Kharge assured Mr. Bhaktavatchalam that he would direct senior officials of the police and excise departments to take immediate action against the person who was allegedly involved in the manufacture of illicit liquor at Kolar Gold Fields.
