By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, MARCH. 13. The President of the Congress Party, Ms.
Sonia Gandhi, will unveil the statue of the former prime
minister, Rajiv Gandhi, here on March 18.
The President of the All-India Seva Dal, Mr. B.K. Hariprasad,
told presspersons here on Tuesday that the bronze statue of Rajiv
Gandhi, to be unveiled on Platform Road, was the first of its
kind in the State.
A voluntary agency, the Sri Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Organisation,
which worked for the welfare of the poor, had put up the statue
on its own at a cost of Rs. 4 lakhs. No funds were received from
either the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) or the State
Government.
He said the circle, where the statue had been installed, had been
beautifully landscaped. Besides, facilities for potable water had
been provided. A bus shelter had also been provided to help the
commuters.
Mr. Hariprasad said nearly 2,000 Seva Dal volunteers were being
trained at the Seva Dal camp. Of them, 1,000 volunteers were from
Karnataka. The Seva Dal volunteers would not only provide
security to the Congress leaders but also provide security at the
venue.
Besides, the Seva Dal volunteers would help in making
arrangements for hospitality, transport and medical facilities.
He said 600 Seva Dal volunteers had provided succour to the
earthquake victims in Gujarat. Of them, 250 volunteers were from
Karnataka.
The Seva Dal volunteers had also participated in the relief and
rehabilitation of the victims of the cyclone in Orissa last year.
The Seva Dal volunteers, he said, would undertake padayatras in
all the 12 Assembly constituencies of Bangalore to make people
aware of the plenary session of the party.
He said 250 Seva Dal volunteers would participate in the
padayatra which would be held for four days from today. On
Tuesday, the Seva Dal volunteers covered Chamarajpet, Chickpet,
