3 nabbed for trying to sell govt. land

BANGALORE, MARCH 13. The City police have prevented an attempt by
``land-grabbers'' to sell government land worth Rs. 7 crores to
leading industrialists at a hotel recently.
Police arrested Ramaiah (50) of Hosur, Appaswamy (45) of
Koramangala and Pandurangaiah (46) of Kamalanagar while they were
waiting for industrialists at a hotel in Kalasipalyam. They had
allegedly collected an advance of Rs. 7 lakhs from the
industrialists.
The police said the three, along with four other associates, had
allegedly fabricated documents to show that over 11 acres of
government land was owned by them. They allegedly possessed fake
documents to suggest that a 4-acre 18-gunta land adjoining Mantri
Apartment in Siddapura was owned by their associates, Lakhsman (3
acre 08 guntas) and V.S.Krishna (1 acre 10 guntas). The documents
showed that they had got lands from the Special Deputy
Commissioner in 1978-79 as ``Inamti'' lands. They allegedly got
the documents prepared with the help of revenue officials.
Besides, they had procured fake documents to suggest that
Appaswamy, Pandurangaiah and another accused, Subhash Patil,
owned two acres of land each in Ibbalur village. The police found
they had got fake documents relating to another one acre of land
forming part of Channasandra burial ground in the name of three
others. The police gave the name of another accused as Nagaraj.
The Kalasipalyam police have registered a case based on a
complaint received by them early this month.
Dowry death
An 18-year-old woman who was set on fire allegedly by her husband
and her in-laws for more dowry over a month ago in Gurappanapalya
in MICO Layout Police Station limits, died at Victoria Hospital
on Monday.
Police said the woman, identified as Javeda (18), was harassed
for more dowry by her husband and her in-laws. She was set on
fire allegedly by them on February 4. The Mico Layout Police have
arrested her husband, Babajan, his father, Aslam Pasha, and
mother, Khaleem.
Convict arrested
The Rajagopalanagar Police arrested Shanmugam (41) of Kamalanagar
in Baveshwaranagar, who had been convicted for life for allegedly
burning his wife in 1989.
Police said Shanmugam, who was sentenced to undergo imprisonment
for life and whose case was pending before the Supreme Court, was
reported absconding since 1996.
He was traced by Rajagopalanagar Police in Kadur District of
Tamil Nadu. He has now been put in Central Jail here after being
produced before the Principal City Civil and Sessions Magistrate.
Lorry cleaner dies
A lorry cleaner, Ravi (17), who was injured when he fell while
climbing a moving lorry on Monday, died at Kempegowda Hospital
later in the day on Ullal Road in Jnanabharathi Police Station
limits.
The driver of the lorry has been arrested.
Constable hurt in a chase

BANGALORE, MARCH 13. A man allegedly threw stones at a police
head constable, inflicting minor injuries on him, on being chased
in Jayanagar 4th E Block early on Monday.
The head constable, Mr. Balakrishna, found the man pushing a
motorcycle in a suspicious manner. When he tried to stop him and
enquire, the man took to his heels abandoning the vehicle. When
Mr. Balakrishna chased him, he threw stones at him and fled. The
vehicle has been seized.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. T.Madiyal, has announced cash
prize of Rs. 1,000 to Mr. Balakrishna.
