Man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

HYDERABAD, MARCH 13. The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Mahila Court, Hyderabad, Mrs. Balatripura Sundari, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced Mirza Amzad Baig to 10 years imprisonment and fined Rs. 500 for murdering his wife Arun Jyoti.

Baig was charged with offences under Section 304-B IPC and 498-A IPC. He was sentenced to seven years for causing death demanding dowry and three years for harassment.

According to the Lalaguda police, the incident took place during the night of November 19-20, 1997, when Baig set afire the victim in her mother's house, following a quarrel. Earlier, he had beaten her mercilessly, when she refused to entertain two strangers for a remuneration.

Arun Jyoti was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital via the police station. Her dying declaration was recorded by the Magistrate. She died the next day. Mr. J. Venkaiah, ACP, investigated the case. Mr. Y. Subash, Additional Public Prosecutor, conducted the prosecution.

Baig and Jyoti had fallen in love, eloped and got married without the knowledge of the victim's mother and sister. During two years of married life, when the couple got a son, he used to harass her continuously, both mentally and physically, for want of money and additional dowry. He used to insist that she earn money by any means.
