HYDERABAD, MARCH 13. The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions
Judge, Mahila Court, Hyderabad, Mrs. Balatripura Sundari, on
Tuesday, convicted and sentenced Mirza Amzad Baig to 10 years
imprisonment and fined Rs. 500 for murdering his wife Arun Jyoti.
Baig was charged with offences under Section 304-B IPC and 498-A
IPC. He was sentenced to seven years for causing death demanding
dowry and three years for harassment.
According to the Lalaguda police, the incident took place during
the night of November 19-20, 1997, when Baig set afire the victim
in her mother's house, following a quarrel. Earlier, he had
beaten her mercilessly, when she refused to entertain two
strangers for a remuneration.
Arun Jyoti was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital via the police
station. Her dying declaration was recorded by the Magistrate.
She died the next day. Mr. J. Venkaiah, ACP, investigated the
case. Mr. Y. Subash, Additional Public Prosecutor, conducted the
prosecution.
Baig and Jyoti had fallen in love, eloped and got married without
the knowledge of the victim's mother and sister. During two years
of married life, when the couple got a son, he used to harass her
continuously, both mentally and physically, for want of money and
additional dowry. He used to insist that she earn money by any
