Govt. to crackdown on negligent driving

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 13. The Government would take stringent action against drivers causing accidents due to negligent driving, the Transport Minister, Mr. C. K. Nanu, has said.

Inaugurating the Thiruvananthapuram Sub-Regional Transport Office at Pangappara the Minister said that the Government was even thinking of cancelling the licences of erring drivers. The Government has formed five squads to crack down on driving without licence and overspeeding, he said. More squads would be appointed in the wake of the increase in road accidents, he said.

The responsibility for checking driving offences lies with officials, he said. The Government could not implement the recommendations of commissions due to resistance from certain quarters. Since two lakh new vehicles are coming to the streets every year, the Government would ensure strict vehicle checking, he said.

The next Cabinet meeting would take action on the Kottakkal accident on the basis of the report of the Transport Commissioner. Counters to remit vehicle taxes will be opened in seven panchayats in the Kazhakoottam block panchayat and eight corporation wards, he said.

Mr. Kadakamapally Surendran, MLA, presided.
