Fernandes defiant, allies troubled
The day after the Tehelka.com ``expose'' of
its dirty defence deal-makings, the beleaguered NDA Government
was precariously perched, with its moral authority visibly
depleted and a significant ally, the Trinamool Congress,
threatening to walk out of the ruling coalition.
Four Army officials suspended
The Government today suspended a senior Army
officer and three Defence Ministry officials even as the Army
ordered an in-house court of inquiry in the wake of last
evening's disclosures by the website tehelka.com about the
corruption in defence deals.
NDA stands united behind Govt.
The National Democratic Alliance today
closed ranks and decided to stand united behind the Government,
but the unity and solidarity show was all but ruined by the
Trinamool Congress which not only stayed away from the NDA
meeting at the Prime Minister's residence this evening but struck
a separate and discordant note.
Samata chief condemns clandestine recording
The Samata Party president, Ms. Jaya Jaitly,
today objected to the `clandestine' manner in which the tehelka
tapes recording was done and shown and maintained she never did
or said anything that she would not say in public.
Jana Krishnamurthy acting BJP chief
The Bharatiya Janata Party today continued
to maintain in public that Mr. Bangaru Laxman, its president, was
``innocent,'' but an emergency meeting of the party office-
bearers this afternoon decided to accept his resignation ``with
immediate effect''.

Mischievous allegation, says Home Ministry
Amid persistent rumours of further
disclosures of bribery at high levels, the Union Home Ministry
tonight dismissed as ``mischievous and malicious,'' claims that a
commission of Rs. 325 crores had been paid to its officials in a
Rs. 1300-crore deal for border fencing and communication systems.
Meet on J&K put off
A two-day peace conference on Jammu and
Kashmir has been postponed following non-issuance of visas to
invitees from Pakistan and other countries, its organiser, the
Awami National Conference (ANC) said here today.
Accept Fernandes' resignation: Mamata
The Railway Minister and leader of the
Trinamool Congress, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, today threatened to
``reconsider her party's continuing support to the NDA
Government'' if her demands, including resignation of the Defence
Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, were not accepted.
Patkar arrested
The National Alliance of People's Movement
(NAPM) national convenor, Ms. Medha Patkar, was today arrested
when she along with 300 project affected people (PAP) activists,
tried to defy prohibitory orders in force in south Mumbai, and
march to the Vidhan Bhawan, police said.
