Kanpur toll up
KANPUR, MARCH 18. Unabated violence in Kanpur led to at least
eight more casualties taking the toll to 17 in three days of
communal violence. Five people were killed in fresh incidents of
violence in various localities, including Takia park (Sisamau),
Humayun Bagh and Chamanganj, three others who had sustained
injuries on yesterday died overnight taking the toll to 17, a
police spokesperson said.
While the divisional commissioner, Mr. V.K. Malhotra, confirmed
the death of 12 persons so far, unofficial sources put the figure
at 20. The situation in troubled areas was now under control and
the process of restoring peace had been initiated, he said.
