TDP MLA's son arrested in faction killing case

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, MARCH 18. Mr. Joolakanti Brahma Reddy, son of the Macherla TDP MLA, Ms. Durgamba, was taken into custody by the Guntur police today, in connection with the sensational murder of seven persons in a faction feud on March 10.

A special police party, led by a young Inspector of Police, after a week-long effort, stumbled upon the major catch. This team, which searched numerous hideouts within and outside the ``power corridors'' in Hyderabad, was finally able to arrest Mr. Brahma Reddy, in the early hours of Sunday. The attempt of Mr. Brahma Reddy to escape from the scene was, however, foiled by the police party. Interestingly, Mr. Brahma Reddy was not in the company of any of his associates who were named as accused. When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Mr. J. Purnachandra Rao, neither confirmed nor denied the ``picking up'' of the accused. The sources disclosed that at least a dozen of the accused, including Brahma Reddy, Joolakanti Lakshma Reddy, Pulusu Pedarami Reddy and Kurri Brahma Reddy, had already been picked up by the police. Another 10 persons were also named as accused.

The decision to suspend Mr. Brahma Reddy from the Telugu Desam Party by the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, came in handy for the police to exercise their``powers freely''. The Guntur SP's announcement of suspension of Mr. Pushpa Rao, gunman of Brahma Reddy, from the armed reserve police force was the first step that sent the jitters among the accused. Following this, Mr. Pushpa Rao presented himself before a police station nearest to the place of his stay.
