FIIs net buyers in equities

MUMBAI, MARCH 18. The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net buyers in equities at Rs. 977.1 crores ($210 million) and net sellers in debt at Rs. 27 crores ($5.8 million) for the week ended March 16, that witnessed turmoil on the Bombay Stock Exchange as the Sensex went on a roller coaster ride.

FIIs were net buyers for all the five days of trading despite the erratic movement of the BSE index on the backdrop of political turmoil and measures imposed by the regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). They turned net sellers in debt on March 13, 14 and 15, according to the data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

FIIs were net buyers worth Rs. 493.3 crores ($106 million) on March 14, the highest for the week. On March 13, the day of Tehelka.com expose of fictitious defence deals, the Sensex nosedived by 227 points to touch a 22 month low and saw the FIIs remaining net buyers of Rs. 18.8 crores ($4 million).

SEBI data said foreign funds purchased equities of Rs. 303.7 crores while offloading them worth Rs. 164.2 crores on March 12, thus remaining net buyers of Rs. 139.5 crores ($30 million). On the debt front, FIIs were net sellers to the tune of Rs. 42.8 crores ($9.2 million) on March 15, the highest in the reporting week. They were net buyers of Rs. 30 lakhs and Rs. 36.40 crores on March 12 and March 16 respectively.

The data available on mutual funds for the four days ended March 15 shows that they were net buyers in equities at Rs. 10.73 crores and net sellers in debt at Rs. 2.47 crores.
