Anand scores over Karpov

MONTE CARLO, MARCH 18. World champion Viswanathan Anand missed a chance in one game but utilised the same when offered in the second game to defeat former world champion Anatoly Karpov of Russia 1.5-0.5 in the opening round of the 10th Amber chess tournament here on a wet and windy evening on Saturday.

The results (round one): Rapid: B.Gelfand bt L.Ljubojevic, A.Karpov drew V.Anand, V.Ivanchuk lost to P.Leko, Z.Almasi lost to V.Topalov, V.Kramnik bt J.Piket, A.Shirov bt L.Van Wely.

Blindfold: L.Ljubojevic bt B.Gelfand, V.Anand bt A.Karpov, P.Leko bt V. Ivanchuk, V.Topalov bt Z.Almasi, J.Piket drew V.Kramnik, L.Van Wely lost to A.Shirov.

Combined standings after round one: 1-3: P.Leko (Hun), A.Shirov (Esp), V.Topalov (Bul) 2/2 each, 4-5: V.Anand (Ind), V.Kramnik (Rus) 1.5 each, 6-7: B.Gelfand (Isr), L.Ljubojevic (Yug) 1 each, 8-9: A.Karpov (Rus), J.Piket (Ned) 0.5 each, 10-12: Z.Almasi (Hun), V.Ivanchuk (Ukr), Van Wely (Ned) 0 each.
