Honour for the unsung

IT WAS a unique way to celebrate the International Women's Day. Virgo Event Management, organised a function to honour the unsung achievers of the city. Ten achievers from various walks of life selected the award winners - Leela Bhima Rao, yoga and meditation instructor, Geetha Vasan, who scaled the Himalayas, Kalyani Swami, a social worker, Amala Emmanuel, who teaches rag-pickers, Kanchana Janardhan, who imparts Bharatanatyam training to poor children, Mangai Krishnaswami, who reads for the blind, Geetha Rajagopal, animal activist, Dr. Kanaka, geriatric specialist, Vasantha Mahadevan, art and craft teacher for the poor and Girija Subramanian, artist.

The jury included Chandri Bhat, Shiny Wilson, Stina Vasu, Sarojini Varadappan, S. Sowmya, Sudha Seshiah, Usha Subramaniam, Kamali Sripal, Sabitha Bhengra and Dr. Shramila.

The function was presided over by danseuse Anita Ratnam. Tele star Kutty Padmini was also present.

Apart from the awards ceremony, Virgo also organised competitions in hair style, cookery, computer, communication skills, vegetable carving and poetry.
