College principals seek decentralisation of education

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MARCH 19. A number of issues, including the increase in tuition fees for degree courses and the cut in grants for higher education by the State Government, and computerisation of college accounts, were discussed at the State-level conference of government college principals and joint directors in the Department of Collegiate Education, here on Monday.

Organised by the Karnataka State Government College Principals' Forum in the premises of Government Arts College, the conference was attended by 151 principals from the six sub- divisions.

The president of the forum, Prof. B.S. Lingaraju, who is the Principal of Gubbi First Grade College, regretted that those professors, who had been promoted, did not receive a substantial increase in salaries. This had been brought to the notice of the Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr. G. Parameshwar. A meeting of those in the Ministry and the department, and the representatives of the forum was held to discuss the issue.

The Minister accepted the suggestions.

The conference discussed major issues, including the need for decentralisation of education, valuation of answer scripts, and payment of dearness, travelling allowances.
