Independent joins AIADMK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 19. The Independent MLA in the Assembly, Mr. A. Venkatachalam, today joined the AIADMK in the presence of the general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha.

Mr. Venkatachalam, who was denied ticket in the 1996 election, contested and won as a rebel candidate from the Alangudi constituency in Pudukottai. He was briefly associated with rival factions of the AIADMK.

The Tamil Nadu Kongu Vellala Goundargal Sangam will support the AIADMK-led front in the election, its president, Mr. V. Aarusamy, said today.

Talking to reporters, he said his organisation was offering ``unconditional backing'', to the AIADMK as the DMK Government had ignored the interests of farmers in the last five years.

The DMK Government had not taken any effort to include the community in the Most Backward Classes list, he alleged.

The Tamil Nadu Malaivazh Makkal Sangham has also expressed support to the AIADMK-led front.

Our Tiruchi Special Correspondent reports:

Mr. S. P. Palaniappan, former BJP district secretary and currently a member of the State executive and Mrs. Revathi Palaniappan, secretary of the party's State women's wing today announced their decision to join the AIADMK, along with 30 other party office- bearers.
