Three arrested for attack on GH dean
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MARCH 19. Three persons including a terminated temporary
worker of the Madras Medical College hostel have been arrested in
connection with the assault on the dean of Government General
Hospital.
Police identified the arrested persons as the suspended worker,
Palani of Chintadripet, and his associates-Kannan and Siva-both
casual labourers. A hunt is on for one more person in this
connection.
It may be recalled that Dr. K. Chellappan, GH dean, was attacked
in front of his house at Kodambakkam on Saturday night by a
three-member gang. The victim was seated on the pillion of a
scooter when he was waylaid. The dean was admitted to GH with
bleeding injuries.
The City Police Commissioner Mr. P. Kalimuthu, formed a special
team led by JCP (South), Mr. R. Sekar, which traced the
assailants after sustained investigation.
The investigating team was in the dark initially about the
culprits behind the attack, but the needle of suspicion fell on
Palani who was dismissed on charges of various irregularities.
The suspicion gained ground as Palani was absconding after the
incident, Mr. Sekar said.
Palani, who was arrested by the special police team, allegedly
confessed to the crime. He reportedly told the police that he
planned the attack along with his friends to teach the dean a
lesson, according to Mr. M. C. Sarangan, DCP (Guindy).
He had reportedly accompanied his associates to show them the
dean's house. The arrested persons were identified by the dean
who is convalescing at the GH, the DCP added.
