Jiving again with Joose

IT MADE quite a `rocktail', at the Vineyard Centre on Friday. When the organisers ordered for Joose with No Idea, they had a fair idea of what the blend would mean for the evening.

Hip headbangers and rockers with attitude, had the centre dripping with energy. Energy comprising raw talent, freshness and the will to make themselves heard and, of course, appreciated.

The evening sparked off with the foursome of Joose, belting out their `own comps' with Mario on the bass, prompting the crowd to get on its feet. A seemingly sane Shayne shone with his funky lead solos, as Ryan with a new hair-cut (he had shaved his head before IIT's Saarang) exploded, with a little help from Robyn let loose on the drums, as the audience went head-banging to Limp Bizkit's M:I-2 theme `Take a look around'.

With their numbers oozing energy, Joose went on to perform a reggae version of their funky hit `Joose to cut loose'. ``There was a certain veteran casualness about the four of them,'' one rock fanatic observed.

Post break, the audience had No Idea to rock them, the surprise package for the evening. Nandita, another `Saarang' find, from No Idea had no problems, when she did No Doubt, Alanis Morisette, Pearl Jam or even Iron Maiden.

Mahiar on the bass, highschoolers Aum on the lead guitar, Rodney on the drums, showed a lot of promise. With Donny on the rhythm guitar and Shayne on the keys, No Idea was a package of bright ideas, even as they paid tributes to Tracy Chapman and Mr.Big.

With more Groove nights in the pipeline at Vineyard, in the run up to the June Rock Out festival, the series of concerts in aid of the Acts of Mercy project, promise to keep Chennai rockers alive and kicking.

With the buttermilk distribution project coming up on March 31, watch out for `more'.
