Himalayan peek!

THE BREATHTAKING Himalayan mountains, the shimmering waters of Sindhu, the verdant beauty of Nubra valley. Who wouldn't like to escape to Ladakh to relish these sights. But you can now have this unforgettable experience right in Hyderabad.

Sindhu Darshan, a photographic exhibition, that opened at the ICCR Art Gallery, Ravindra Bharati, on Monday is a window to the dramatic expanse of the Himalayas. The ancient Indian civilisation, which the mighty Sindhu river symbolises, is vividly captured in 90-odd pictures. The pictorial exhibition, organised by the Department of Tourism, is intended to forge a bond of unity with people living in far-flung corners of the country.

A look at the eye-catching pictures is a journey 5000 years back in time. One can see the Nubra valley which used to be the trading route connecting Tibet with Turkmenistan, the sand dunes between Dishit and Hunder, Dha-Manu, the ancient Indo-Iranian people, the Ladakhi belles complete with their turquoise studded perak. The pictures show the great Trans-Himalayan river flowing through the high mountains near the holy Mansarover.

How does the river acquire its name? It comes from the Sanskrit word `Sindhu'. After seeing all this you want to visit the highest inhabited region, do so. But don't forget the word `Jule'. Yes, this is the magic word which means hello, goodbye, please and thank you.
