It was learnt in Lake Success that the U.N. Secretary- General, Trygve Lie, was sounding Western delegations on a new Korea peace formula calling for a simple cease fire unrelated to other Far East issues. He was understood to have revealed his plan to the American, British and French delegations but not to the Russians who did not recognise him as Secretary-General.

Shaw's home thrown open to public

Shaw's Corner in Hertfordshire, home of George Bernard Shaw from 1906 until his death in November last year, was opened on March 17, to the public by Dame Edith Evans.

The house had been received without any endowment ``and we anticipate it will be rather a heavy charge upon our slender resources'', said Viscount Easher, President of the British Drama League and Chairman of the Finance and Historic Buildings Committee of the National Trust.

Peking renews charge of gas warfare

Peking Radio on March 18, renewed the charges it made earlier that American forces in Korea were using poison gas. A broadcast heard in San Francisco quoted an official Chinese military spokesman in Korea as saying that poison gas shells had been used on the Han River front and elsewhere the last on March 6.

Another broadcast said: ``The gas shells emitted a sallow or black vapour which smelt like tincture or sulphur. The victims felt giddy, nauseous and limp. It took them hours to recover.''

This sounded like description of the vapour from ordinary explosives or phosphorous shells.
