Top cop behind pseudo-naxals' release?

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 20. Even before the controversy over some senior police officers trying to influence the city task force for not arresting a notorious extortioner Ch. Srinivas died down, another report of a senior officer coming to the rescue of four pseudo- naxalites in Warangal district has rudely shocked the police top brass here.

Sources disclosed that the Mahabubabad police in Warangal district were forced to release four pseudo-naxalites, who were nabbed allegedly while trying to extort huge amounts of money a fortnight ago. Acting on a tip-off about the gang threatening businessmen, police acted swiftly and nabbed all of them. The police also recovered 16 HE-36 type hand grenades and a revolver from them.

Even before the Mahabubabad police began questioning the foursome, a senior police officer was stated to have ordered the station staff to release them. The order was complied with immediately and ever since, the four pseudo naxalites have gone underground.

Sources added that the four arrested persons, M. Tulasidas, Narayana, Subhan Babu and P. Narendar, were let off on telephonic instructions. Sources maintained that the sixteen hand grenades and the revolver, were however, not given to the released persons.

Incidentally, Ch. Srinivas, who was arrested on charges of extorting money from officials in the twin cities, also hailed from Mahabubabad town. Police officers investigating the extortion racket run by Srinivas stumbled upon evidences linking Srinivas to some senior IPS officers who were believed to have invested huge amounts with the arrested extortionist.
