Speed is new ICC chief executive

CHENNAI, MARCH 20. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the appointment of Mr. Malcolm Speed as its new chief executive. He will replace Mr. David Richards, who held this position since its inception in 1993.

Announcing the appointment of Mr. Speed at a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Malcolm Gray, the President, ICC, said that Mr. Speed who is currently the chief executive of the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), will take charge in July 2001 initially for a three-year term.

According to Mr. Gray, a panel headed by himself, Peter Chingoka of Zimbabwe, Rene Van Lerschot of Netherlands, Lord Maclaurin of England and Ehsan Mani of Pakistan, undertook the search for the post of the chief executive, following an exhaustive search in all regions of the world.

``The task was to recruit the best candidate for the job of leading the ICC's ongoing development as cricket's world governing body, with increasing stature and effectiveness,'' said Mr. Gray.

He also said that ICC would be setting up commercial offices in Europe and Singapore while having its head office in London.

Gray lauded the role played by the outgoing chief executive Richards saying that the former was instrumental in taking the game to many millions of potential new players and enthusiasts and for securing the game's financial future with the signing of multi-million dollar deal with World Sports Group/News Corp.
