Met office to honour volunteers

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 22. World meteorological day is being celebrated at the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre on Friday.

Living up to this year's theme ,"Volunteers for Weather, Climate and Water", the centre would honour volunteers helping it in collecting rainfall and temperature data at ural level -- be it government employees or private individuals -- with a word of appreciation through citations.

On the occasion, the centre would throw its observatory open to the public apart from conducting an exhibition on science of meteorology in general and the home work being done by meteorologists for issuing weather forecasts in particular.

As a special attraction, the centre would release "meteorological balloons" into the skies twice during the day -- at 11 am and 4 pm. The public would be allowed to see even this exercise. In this context, Mr B. V. S. Amatya, Meteorologist, HMC, recalled, in a note, the services being extended to the India Meteorological Department in this part of the globe by a number of volunteers who included "Viswamohini", a ship sailing from Singapore to Chennai which was caught in a storm in the Bay of Bengal on May 8, 1990, but yet recorded meteorological data which served as a "vital data" for issuing forecasts.

He said over 6,700 vessels from 52 countries were helping the World Meteorological Organisation by giving such data.
