A varied collection
THE CRAFT of Madhya Pradesh, many of them with a distinctive
tribal flavour, are on display at an exhibition and sale
organised by Mriganayanee at the C.P. Arts Centre, Mini Hall,
Eldams Road.
Apart from some stunning Dhokhraware lamps, the exhibition
showcases a variety of Madhya Pradesh's attractive handicrafts
such as Bastar woodwork, ironcraft and block prints from Bagh.
The compelling tribal culture of Bastar finds expression in a
host of functional decorative items.
For the first time, Chennai will see pieces of furniture created
by Bastar tribals out of log wood.
Also on display are burnt wood and etched artefacts, picture
frames and brick-a-brac, again made by Bastar tribals, along with
some very attractive dhokhraware and ironcraft artefacts and
lamps.
Bastar's bamboo craft, including flutes, jars and boxes are other
attractions at the Mrignayanee sale.
A range of arresting brass objects in the tribal style are also
on view.
Block prints from Bagh on dress material, saris and bed linen
bring the very special block print culture of Madhya Pradesh to
Chennai.
For the sari buff, the sale offers a wide selection of reasonably
priced Maheshwaris and some stunning tussars.
Also available are jute bags, chairs, pouches, etc., crafted by
victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
Colourful dhurries form part of Mriganayanee's collection of the
rich craft of Madhya Pradesh. The exhibition-cum-sale will be on
till March 25.
