Govt. will not resign: Advani
The Government will ``fulfill the people's mandate and shoulder the responsibility given to it till it commands a majority in the Lok Sabha,'' the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, told his party MPs at an emergency meeting of the parliamentary party at the end of the first part of the budget session. The message was clear - the Government will not resign and oblige the Opposition.

Judge spotted for Tehelka probe
Mr. Justice K. Venkataswami, retired judge of the Supreme Court, is likely to head the probe into the tehelka controversy. The name of Mr. Justice Venkataswami, who retired in September 1999, has been suggested by the Chief Justice of India, Dr. A.S. Anand.

Space odyssey ends in a blaze
The famed Russian space station, Mir, ended its glorious 15-year odyssey on Friday morning with a fiery splashdown in the Southern Pacific. The flawless descent of the 140-tonne Mir into target zone was the final triumph for the veteran space station and its ground controllers.

Cong. to campaign for PMK
Dumping its ``concerns and reservations'' over the pro-LTTE Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress today declared that it would ``whole-heartedly'' work for the victory of PMK candidates in the coming Assembly elections in the State.

Ex-Kerala Minister gets bail
The Supreme Court today granted bail to the former Kerala Electricity Minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader, Mr. R. Balakrishna Pillai, and former chairman of the State Electricity Board, Mr. P. Kesava Pillai, who were convicted and sentenced to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment by the trial court in the `graphite corruption case'.

Nationwide IT swoop on brokers
In a nationwide operation, Income Tax authorities today carried out searches to unearth tax evasion by leading brokers in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

PM greets Pakistan
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, today reiterated India's commitment to establish good relations with Pakistan. In a message to Gen. Pervez Musharraf on the occasion of Pakistan's national day, Mr. Vajpayee said, ``India looks to the future and seeks to promote peace and friendship''.

Sena not for cricketing ties with Pak.
At a time when attempts are being made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to revive cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, the Shiv Sena today said it would not allow cricket match with the hostile neighbour till Islamabad stopped abetting trans-border terrorism.
