CBI arrests Ketan Parekh
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today
arrested Mr. Ketan Parekh, leading stock broker, in connection
with the Rs. 130- crore pay-order scam. Equities fell sharply by
147.18 points today due to the imminent arrest of Parekh.
CSE elected directors quit
Nine elected directors today resigned from the
Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) protesting the demutualisation
proposal mooted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India
(SEBI) for stock exchanges.
Kamal Nath in Kolkata to strike deal with Mamata
The Congress today expressed the hope that
it would be able to clinch a seat-sharing arrangement with the
Trinamool Congress by tomorrow. ``We should be able to reach a
settlement by tomorrow,'' said Mr. Kamal Nath, AICC general
secretary in charge of West Bengal.
CBI gets Governor's nod to prosecute Laloo
The Bihar Governor, Mr. V.C. Pandey, has granted
sanction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to
prosecute the former Chief Minister and RJD president, Mr. Laloo
Prasad Yadav, in a new case related to the multi-crore fodder
scam.
'Fernandes okayed Krasnopol deal'
The former Defence Minister, Mr. George
Fernandes, used his discretion to clear the deal for the Russian
laser-guided Krasnopol shells, even after shortcomings were
discovered during high-altitude trials.
Bengali actor rejects special jury award
Following in the footsteps of film-maker, Mr.
Gautam Ghosh, who refused the national award for the best Bengali
film `Dekha', thespian, Mr. Soumitra Chatterjee, today spurned
the special jury award for his role of a blind poet in the film.
Hindujas fail to turn up
The special court for CBI cases took
exception to the absence of the three Hinduja brothers, accused
in the `Rs. 64-crore Bofors pay-off case, when the case was taken
up for hearing today.
President recovering
The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, is
recovering after a surgical procedure he underwent yesterday to
remove gall bladder stones and is likely to be discharged
tomorrow, doctors at the Gangaram Hospital said here today.
CBI case against official
The CBI has registered a case under the
Official Secrets Act and conducted search operations on the
premises of a Section Officer of the Union Home Ministry who had
allegedly leaked classified information to Tehelka.com in
September-October last.
Student shot dead in U.S.
A 16-year-old high school student was
shot dead by a former student at Lew Wallace high school in Gary
today, authorities said.
Aviation fuel decontrol from April 1
The Government today announced decontrol of
aviation turbine fuel (ATF) with effect from April 1, reducing
the price by about Rs. 3 per litre. Prices of ATF will now be
market-determined and fixed by oil companies.
