Simultaneous bypolls for 3 LS seats
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MARCH 31. The Chief Election Commissioner, Dr. M. S.
Gill, today announced that byelections to the Lok Sabha
constituencies of Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, Shahjahanpur in
Uttar Pradesh and Midnapore in West Bengal and the Kshetrigao
Assembly constituency in Manipur, would be held on May 10 along
with the Assembly polls in five States.
The poll to the Banamalipur Assembly constituency in Tripura will
be held on May 11.
By-elections to the three Lok Sabha seats were caused due to the
death of P. R. Kumaramangalam (Tiruchirapalli), Jitendra Prasada
(Shahjahanpur) and Indrajit Gupta (Midnapore).
Dr. Gill said it was decided to defer the byelection for the
Sabarkantha Lok Sabha constituency in Gujarat.
The decision was taken after considering representations and in
order not to disrupt the quake-relief measures in the State.
By-elections to the Wachi, Tral, Doru and Habbakadal Assembly
constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir would be held later.
This is due to the difficulties being faced with regard to
availability of security forces, since they would be heavily
deployed in the five States.
Dr. Gill said these clear vacancies were not subject to any
election petition or appeal pending in any court, and the
remaining tenure of the Assemblies concerned was more than one
year and hence byelections to these Assembly seats would be held
at a later date.
