Be alert in enrolment, Jain tells Bar Council

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 31. The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Mr. N.K. Jain, today advised the Bar Council to be more cautious in enrolling advocates. For, it had come to the notice of courts that some persons were practising on the basis of fake degrees, he said.

Speaking on the importance of the council and the role it had to play, after unveiling a portrait of Mr. R. Margabandhu, former Chairman, Bar Council of Tamil Nadu, and Rajya Sabha MP, at the Bar Council here, the Chief Justice said members of the legal profession had a full responsibility to discharge in the administration of justice. They should realise their responsibilities. But, nowadays at times, advocates resorted to boycott of courts and this action did not befit them. In view of such situations, the High Court constituted committees at district levels to take immediate steps to solve the problems. Efforts should be made to resolve problems through dialogue. Advocates should not give room for the public to get an impression that they thought themselves to be above law.

Mr. Jain paid tributes to the former council chairman for his simplicity, hardwork and dedication.

Mr. M.S. Jawaharlal, council chairman, Mr. R. Dhanapal Raj, vice- chairman, Mr. R. Krishnamoorthy, senior advocate, and Mr. Veeraraghavan, advocate, were among those who paid tributes to Mr. Margabandhu.
