Old woman robbed of jewels

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 31. An aged woman was robbed of 80 sovereigns of jewellery at knife point by a two-member gang at Cenotaph First Street in Teynampet on Friday evening.

The incident led to panic in the busy residential locality as the culprits struck in the heart of the city and escaped with the booty.

The victim Ms. Santhammal (80) was alone on the ground floor of the house when the gang members knocked at the door. When she opened the door, the culprits pushed her into an inner room and whipped out hidden knives. They removed about 50 sovereigns of gold jewels including 22 bangles which the victim had on her person and took the remaining from the almirah, according to the inmates.

The victim was in a state of shock. Her son Mr. Jayavelu, general manager, NLC, who came to the house on learning the incident, said despite their advice she had the habit of wearing a large number of jewels.

The culprits did not harm Ms. Santhammal and left behind her ear studs as they could not be removed easily. The entire operation was completed in about ten minutes.

Police suspect that some person, who had been aware of the movement of the victim, was behind the crime.
