Film festival draws crowd
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 31. The Sixth International Film
Festival of Kerala, now on at different venues in the city, has
started attracting crowds in large numbers.
Movie buffs are sparing no effort to grab the opportunity that
has come their way to get to know of cinema in different
countries. If the long queues at the festival office functioning
at the Kanakakkunnu Palace, for obtaining delegates' passes, are
any indication, the festival is certain to be a big `hit' at
least in terms of attendance. Almost all the movies exhibited so
far have run to packed houses.
One of the main attractions of the third day, tomorrow, will be
the screening of `Boycott,' directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, a
maverick of contemporary Iranian cinema, who is also one of the
members of the Jury for the ongoing film festival. This film, of
114 minutes duration, is to be shown at the Sreekumar theatre, at
9-30 a.m.
The other films to be screened at this venue tomorrow are the
Japanese creation `Blue Tower,' directed by Katsumi Sakaguchi,
`Enter,' directed by Viet Bastian of Germany, `The Five dollar
Movie' of Devin Scott of the USA, `Goodbye Casanova' by Mauro
Borrelli, and `One,' directed by Tony Barbieri, also of the USA,
in that order. All of them are featured under the `World
Section'.
Also being screened under the `World Section' category, are
`Durian Durian,' a film from Hong Kong, directed by Fruit Chan
and `My Father's Angel,' directed by the Canadian director Daver
Majanavic.
Malayalam film maker Biju Viswanath's `Deja Vu,' finds a place in
the Competition section. It is to be screened at the New Theatre,
tomorrow, along with Irene Turner's `The Girl's Room' (USA),
`Maral' of Sabaghzadeh of Iran and the Canadian `Hochelaga,'
directed by Michel Jette, all under the same category. `This is
My Moon' of the Sri Lankan director Asija Handagama, is also to
be screened tomorrow, at Remya theatre, under the `Competition'
section.
Under the Homage section, the much-acclaimed Malayalam movie `Oru
Vadakkan Veeragatha,' is to be screened tomorrow at the Tagore
theatre, at 6-30 p.m., as a tribute to the `Bharat' award winner,
the late Balan K. Nair. The film is open to the public.
The film under the `Malayalam Cinema Now' category,
`Madhuranombarakaatu,' directed by Kamal, is to be screened at
the New theatre at 8-45 p.m.
The `Contemporary Indian Cinema' section features Director
Pavithran's `Kuttappan, the Witness' and `Malaise' made by
Rotuparno Ghosh, both at the Kairali theatre. At the same venue
will be screened three films under the `World' Section- Ricardo
Bravo's `Oriundi' (Brazil), `Inscrutable Americans' by Chandra
Siddartha (U.S.) and `The Sea That Thinks' by the Dutch director
Gert de Graff.
An Oscar winner, the German film `Quiero Ser,' selected as the
best live action short film, is the other major attraction on the
third day, tomorrow.
