Chennai & Bangalore likely to host mini World Cup

CHENNAI, MARCH 31. Chennai and Bangalore were likely to host the ICC-knockout tournament (mini World Cup) in September 2002, said Mr. A.C. Muthiah, president, Board of Control for Cricket in India, here, at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, on Saturday. He was speaking at a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) get-together to mark the successful conduct of the India-Australia final Test and the Siyaram Cup benefit one-dayer to raise funds for the earthquake victims in Gujarat.

Mr. Muthiah said he was delighted to see Test cricket regaining its popularity among the fans, and had a word of praise for the TNCA officials, volunteers, and curator K. Parthasarathy, who all played their part in making it a match to remember.

In his welcome address, Mr. Ashok Kumbhat, secretary, TNCA, thanked the TNCA officials, volunteers, and the Chennai Police, for their contribution. Mr. Sampath Kumar, assistant secretary, TNCA, read the vote of thanks. During the function, Mr. Muthiah presented a memento to the Chennai City Police.

Later, speaking to presspersons about the country's participation in the Sharjah tournament, Mr. Muthiah said the Government did not have objection in India meeting Pakistan, only the venue was a problem. He added he had not yet received the final word from the Government.
