NEW DELHI, APRIL 8. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has
registered another case of disproportionate assets against the
suspended Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs,
Mr. B.P.Verma.
Mr. Verma, who was removed from the post a day before being
raided by the CBI, is already facing charges of criminal
conspiracy and misuse of official position.
Highly-placed agency sources told PTI that a decision to register
a disproportionate assets case against Mr. Verma was taken days
after registering an FIR for criminal conspiracy and seeking
illegal gratification.
The sources said several assets were found either in his name or
those of his family members besides some `benami' property.
The sources said the sleuths of the anti-corruption branch were
looking into the documents seized from Mr. Verma's official and
residential premises on March 31.
The agency has so far arrested six persons in connection with the
case which includes Mr. Verma his son, Mr. Siddarth, Ms. Bhawna
Pandey, an alleged conduit of Mr. Verma, Mr. Shravan Kumar,
partner of A.K. Enterprise which allegedly paid bribe to the
suspended chairman for securing release of its consignment.
The agency also arrested Mr. K. Vijay Pratap, an alleged
middleman who paid bribe in crores of rupees on behalf of the
firm to Mr. Siddarth in the capital on March 23 and Mr. Rajeev
Kumar, manager of firms owned by Mr. Siddarth.
