Coast Guard rescues injured Russian
By Our Staff Reporter
KOCHI, APRIL 14. The Indian Coast Guard rescued and evacuated an
injured crew member from a Russian merchant vessel, Yarmouth, 460
km away from here on Friday.
The Coast Guard assistant commander, Mr. Anwar Khan, said the
vessel with 25 crew on board was en route to Chennai with a cargo
of 25,000 tonnes of scrap. Mr. Antony Yuriy, the ship's
electrical engineer, reportedly suffered toxic gas poisoning
while entering an unused compartment, fell down from the ladder
and suffered severe head injuries.
The vessel contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre
(MRCC) in Greece, which in turn relayed the message to the Indian
Coast Guard rescue sub-centre at Kochi. The Coast Guard here
diverted its offshore patrol vessel, CGS Varuna, for the rescue
mission on the high seas.
The Varuna offloaded the unconscious and injured Russian 420 km
off Kochi at 6.40 p.m. on Thursday. After administering first-aid
onboard, Mr. Yurily was brought ashore on Friday and was admitted
to Cochin Hospital here. The hospital authorities described his
condition as stable.
