Decision on Malda seats today

KOLKATA, APRIL 14. The Congress today said that the dispute over two Malda seats with the Trinamool Congress would be resolved by tomorrow with the veteran party leader, Mr. A.B.A. Gani Khan Chaudhury, being given a `free hand' to take the final decision.

``The candidates for the two seats, Englishbazar and Harishchandrapur, will be decided by Mr. Khan Chaudhury. The Trinamool Congress leader, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, had also agreed to go by his decision on those seats,'' the West Bengal Congress president, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, told reporters here.

Mr. Chaudhury had threatened to withdraw from the alliance if Englishbazar was not allocated to the Congress, though the Trinamool had earmarked the seat for itself.

Depending on the decision by Mr. Chaudhury, he said, the Congress may contest one more seat over the 57 allocated to the party.

Besides the two Malda seats, there were also some disputes on Raiganj and Kaliaganj, which would be interchanged with the Trinamool, he said. ``The Raiganj seat, which is with the Trinamool, will be ours while Kaliaganj will be given to them. In a Durgapur seat, there is a problem regarding the candidate but that is our internal matter and we will solve it ourselves.''
