Metrowater concerned over indiscriminate digging of borewells
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, APRIL 14. Concerned over indiscriminate digging of deep
borewells all over the city, Metrowater has recommended the
maximum depth for new borewells in different parts of the city.
Based on lithological formation, the agency has categorised the
entire city into five regions. The regions are southern coastal
aquifer belt, areas with alluvial/sandy formation adjacent the
coast, areas with clay formation, areas with clay and sand mixed
formation, and areas with hard rock formation.
The recommended levels for the five areas are mentioned as
follows. Metrowater, in a press release issued on Thursday,
appealed to the residents to keep new borewells less than the
suggested levels to safeguard the precious groundwater resources.
Acknowledging that the groundwater table depleted at a faster
rate due to the failure of two successive north-east monsoons,
the water agency said the average summer water level during the
normal period ranged from 9 ft to 15 ft. Now, it stood at 20
ft.to 40 ft.
