Sri Lankan Navy kills two rebels

COLOMBO, APRIL 16. At least two Tamil rebels were killed and seven Navy sailors were wounded as heavy battles erupted in the high seas off Sri Lanka's northern coast today, shattering the ceasefire declared by both sides.

The Defence Ministry said the fighting erupted when a patrol craft tried to investigate a flotilla of unidentified boats off the coast of Chalai.

``As the naval craft approached them to investigate, it was fired upon by the unidentified craft. The naval craft also retaliated immediately,'' the Ministry said. A Navy gun boat lost its engines due to rebel fire and had to be towed to the northern navy port of Kankesanthurai.
