Govt. for pro-active role to solve inter-State disputes

NEW DELHI, APRIL 18. The Centre is willing to play a pro-active role in resolving inter-state disputes, including the water row between Punjab and Haryana, the Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, informed the Rajya Sabha today.

Responding to supplementaries during question hour regarding long-pending inter-state disputes, Mr. Advani said ``we can play a facilitating role. But if a pro-active role is expected of the Centre, we will be willing as the Centre should do more than the role of a facilitator''.

The Centre was keen on resolving the water dispute between Haryana and Punjab not merely because the States were ruled by partners of the National Democratic Alliance. ``Even otherwise, the Centre has to play a pro-active role as we have done in the case of Cauvery water dispute,'' he said.

Earlier, in a written reply, the Minister of State for Home, Mr. I.D. Swami, said the Centre was making efforts to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan to discuss outstanding water-related issues between these States in an endeavour to arrive at an amicable solution.
