Govt. taking steps to contain ISI: Jaswant
NEW DELHI, APRIL 18. The Government is initiating steps to
counter and contain the ISI activities in border States, the
External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, informed the Lok
Sabha today.
The Government has taken note of the reported statement of a
former ISI official during the Baisakhi celebrations in Pakistan
that the Sikhs had to continue their ``peaceful'' struggle for
Khalistan. Replying to Mr. Buta Singh, the Minister said the head
of a Pakistan-based Gurdwara management body had made the
statement during a ceremony in a Gurdwara where members of
visiting Indian Sikh jatha were present.
Mr. Jaswant Singh said the issue of cross-border terrorism with
special reference to Pakistan and Afghanistan had been the
subject of extensive discussion during the recent visit of the
U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan. India had never sought
that Mr. Annan act as facilitator in settling bilateral relations
between India and Pakistan.
