Sudharshanam 'runs into' Chidambaram

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, APRIL 18. In a fresh controversy in the TMC camp, the party treasurer, Mr. D. Sudarshanam, met the expelled leader and TMC Democratic Forum president, Mr. P. Chidambaram, today.

While Mr. Sudarshanam claimed that it was an ``accidental meeting,'' the forum, in a press release, stated the TMC treasurer met Mr. Chidambaram at his residence this morning and sought ``support'' for his election from the Tiruvallur constituency.

Mr. Sudarshanam, who initially denied his meeting with Mr. Chidambaram, later told the media that he ``ran into Mr. Chidambaram'' when he visited a nursing home in Nungambakkam. ``When I saw Mr. Chidambaram standing outside his house in Nungambakkam, I stopped by and we merely exchanged pleasantries. There was no political discussion,'' he maintained.

He said only the TMC president, Mr. G.K. Moopanar, would decide on whether to field him in Tiruvallur. He charged that Mr. Chidambaram was indulging in ``cheap politics'' and that the TMC candidates did not require the support of the forum to win the election.

But Mr. Sudarshanam's explanation did not satisfy his rivals in the party as they began a whispering campaign for disciplinary action against him.
