By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 18. A telephone department sub-divisional engineer was arrested amidst high drama on Anna Salai this morning after an incident of alleged eve-teasing and assault of a young woman in an MTC bus on route number 29 A.

Police identified the arrested person as R.Subramaniam (52) of Jeevan Nagar in Adambakkam. The police did not register a case under the Eve Teasing Act, which was demanded by the victim's kin.

According to police, the accused had been following the victim and misbehaving with her for the past few days. Unable to bear the harassment, she reportedly questioned his behaviour today in public which led to a wordy duel near Dams Road stop.

The accused allegedly slapped the woman in full view of passers- by which led to a commotion, with bus passengers coming to the rescue of the victim.

The Chintadripet police sub-inspector, Mr. R. Mohan, who was on patrol brought the situation under control by apprehending the telephones employee. The woman then lodged a formal complaint with the police. Only then did the police realise that the detained person was a telephones department employee.

The police were initially hesitant to register a case following pressure from some groups in support of the detained person. A police officer even attempted to persuade the victim to withdraw the complaint.

However, as news spread and the victim stood her ground, police were forced to register a case and arrest the accused. The police booked him under Section 75 of the City Police Act (Committing an act of nuisance).

A journalist related to the victim took up the matter with the police. The Chennai Press Club condemned the assault on the woman.
