PMK releases Pondy list

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 18. The PMK today released its list of candidates for nine out of the 10 constituencies it is contesting in alliance with the AIADMK in Pondicherry.

The candidates are: Prof. M. Ramadoss (Cottuchery in Karaikal), Dr. K. Dhanraj (Nettapakkam), Mr. S. Ambalavan (Tirunallar), Mr. S. Balaraman (Oussudu reserved), Mr. K.R. Anandharaman (Ariankuppam), Mr. Thanga Vikraman (Kuruvinatham), Mr. N.G. Pannerselvam (Reddiarpalayam), Mr. K. Deivanayagam (Bahoor reserved) and Mr. R. Malarmannan (Cassicadai).

Announcing the list, Mr. M. Manjini, president of the Pondicherry committee of the PMK, said the nominee for the Palloor constituency in Mahe region would be announced soon.

Mr. Deivanayagam was legislator of the Territorial Assembly in the short-lived regime of the then DMK-Janata Party coalition ministry in 1990.

Prof. Ramadoss, who works in the Pondicherry Central University, had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha poll in 1999 as PMK nominee. In that election, the Congress, with the AIADMK support, wrested the constituency from the DMK. Mr. Farook of the Congress emerged victorious after defeating the PMK and TMC candidates. Mr. Kannan was the then TMC nominee.

Except Mr. Deivanayagam and Prof. Ramadoss, other PMK contestants are greenhorns in the poll battle here. The fielding of Prof. Ramadoss in Cottuchery is contrary to the expectation that he would be fielded in any of urban constituencies in Pondicherry. At one stage, he was expected to be fielded in Muthialpet. But this segment has been earmarked to the AIADMK which has announced that Mr. Kasilingam is its candidate.

Cottuchery will witness a three-cornered fight involving the Congress, the BJP and the PMK. Mr. M. Visweswaraan, the BJP nominee here, was expected to be a candidate in one of the constituencies in Pondicherry. The Congress is expected to renominate Mr. R. Nalamaharajan.
