Uttaranchal tops league table

INDORE, APRIL 18. The 32nd summer National bridge championship
for the Khosla Trophy commenced here on Wednesday at Hotel Crown
Palace organised by M.P. Contract Bridge Association having 26
teams in the fray.
At the end of the first four matches of the league the newly
formed Uttaranchal remained at the top of league table with 90
VPs in Group `A' followed by Andhra Pradesh which had 86 VPs.
In Group `B' Maharashtra `B' took the top spot with 78 VPs.
followed by Assam with 71 VPs. Uttaranchal represented by B. Roy,
R.V.S. Chauhan, M. Tyall, R.K. Gupta, R.P. Bhatnagar and Col.
R.K. Bhatnagar all from Dehradun won all the four matches played
against M.P.I. (17-13), Chandigarh (24-6), Kerala (25-4) and
Maharashtra `A' (24-6).
Andhra Pradesh also remained unbeaten winning against Kerala (24-
6), Ladies Team (18-12), Chandigarh (19-11) and M.P.I. (25-3).
The Group `B' leader Maharashtra `B' represented by B.
Sreedharan, Ajay Khare, Arun Bapat, Ajit Chakradeo, Vinay Desai
and Raju Tolani collected 78 V.P. in four matches. The team
defeated Orissa (25-5), and West Bengal (22-8) but lost 14-16 to
Assam. It got 17 imp. when it had a bye.
Assam remained second with 71 VPs. It started with a bye point of
17 VPs in the first session and defeated SPSB in the second match
by 24-6. Thereafter it tasted a marginal 14-16 defeat at the hand
of Tamil Nadu and followed it up by a hard earned win (16-14)
against Maharashtra `B'.
The teams were placed in two group of 13 teams each and the
contest began with a full league in both the groups at the end of
which the first four teams in the order of merit from each group
would qualify for the quarterfinal play off.
The groupwise position at the end of 4th session (VP scores in
brackets):
Group `A': Uttaranchal (90), Andhra Pradesh (86), Delhi (62), DAE
(62), MP III (66), AIESCB (61), M.P.I. (58), Ladies Team (57),
Indian Railways (55), Rajasthan (54), Chandigarh (47),
Maharashtra `A' (46), Kerala (40).
Group `B': Maharashtra `B' (78), Assam (71), Tamil Nadu (68),
Orissa (67), PSCB (67), U.P. (64), M.P. II (62), OFSCB (60), West
Bengal (59), SPSB (59), Gujarat (58), Karnataka (50), Haryana
(30).
