13 killed in ghastly road mishap

BANGALORE, APRIL 21. Thirteen persons, including a woman and her
two children, were killed and 10 injured, five of them seriously,
when a Tempo van in which they were travelling collided with a
lorry in Ranebennur Rural Police Station limits in Haveri
District on Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the accident took place near the Mico Seeds
unit, off Chalageri village, on Kumarapattana-Harihara Road
around noon.
The driver of the lorry, which was proceeding to Harihar, lost
control over the vehicle after its front tyre burst. It then
collided with the van, which was totally mangled. The front
portion of the lorry was damaged, police said.
The van was carrying passengers from Makanur and other villages
surrounding Harihar to Ranebennur. There were 25 of them in it
when the accident took place.
While 10 persons were killed on the spot, three succumbed to
injuries at the Government Chigateri Hospital in Davangere in the
evening.
In all, eight men, three women and two children were killed in
the mishap. Five seriously injured persons, who have been
admitted to Chigateri Hospital, are battling for life. However,
five others admitted to the Government hospital at Ranebennur are
out of danger, according to police.
Among those killed were Jareena Khanum Kandari (24) of Ranebennur
and her 18-month-old daughter, Arisha Kanum. Though it is said
that Jareena's seven-year-old son was also killed in the mishap,
no confirmation was available on this count. But the identity of
one of the children killed in the mishap is yet to be
established.
Others who were killed in the accident have been identified as
Jagadesh Channappa Theggina (22), driver of the van and resident
of Chalageri, N.G.Shivaputrappa (30) of Holesiragur, Bojappa
Ningappa Poojary (50) of Makanur, Laiq Ali Khan Guranni (34),
Nitish Hosmani (7), Earamma Poojar (60), Ramappa Haladikatti
(65), all residents of Harihar, Hanumanthappa Ramappa Angadi (40)
from Benakanakonda and Nagappa Kenchappa Ammanavar (50) from
Kamadod. The identity of two others is not known.
According to police, those injured were Akkamma (40) of Karjagi,
Gadigamma Poojar (40) of Tumminkatti, Mujahid Shareif (30) of
Ayanur in Shimoga District, Yogesh Channappa (27) of
Hosagovinakoppa in Shikaripur taluk, Brahmanand Neelappa (30) of
Hulikatti, Krishna Talwar (30) of Chalageri, Basavaraj Banakar
(30) of Hirekerur, and Gowru Sab (27) of Davangere.
Soon after the mishap, the Haveri District Superintendent of
Police, Mr. M. F. Pasha, and the Ranebennur Circle Police
Inspector, Mr. M. S. Jadhav, rushed to the spot and supervised
the rescue operation.
Police said the relatives of the dead as well as the injured
passengers had been informed about the tragedy. The Ranebennur
Rural Police have registered a case.
