Cong. names 121 candidates for Assam

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 21. Former Assam Chief Minister, Mrs. Anwara Taimur, former MPs Mr. Bhubneshwar Kalita, Mr. Nripen Goswami and Congress(I) Legislature Party leader, Mr. Silvious Condapan, figure prominently in the list of 121 candidates for the coming Assembly elections in Assam. The list for the remaining seats will be declared later.

Releasing the list, the party spokesperson, Mr. Jaipal Reddy, said his party would contest the Assam elections on its own. Names for some of the seats had been held back by the leadership and would be made known soon. Mr. Reddy claimed that his party would not only win the elections but ``would sweep the polls''.

Prominent amongst those who figure in the list released today are former Ministers Mr. Misbahaul Islam, Mr. Dinesh Prasad Goala and Mr. Gautam Roy. Several relatives of party leaders have also been given tickets - Mrs. Jiban Tara Ghatowar, wife of the CPP secretary, Mr. Pawan Singh Ghatowar; Mrs. Hemprabha Saikia, wife of late Hiteshwar Saikia; and Mr. S.R. Subba, brother of Mr. M.K. Subba. A sitting MLA, Mr. Joy Chandra Pansi, has been denied a ticket in order to accommodate Mrs. Ghatowar. A notable absentee from the list is the PCC chief Mr. Tarun Gogoi.

The party has, for tactical reasons, also decided to leave the Sibsagar seat pending, this is the seat that the Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, contests from. Prominent amongst the names that are being talked about for the seat is that of former MP, Mr. Krip Chalia. The other two seats that have been kept pending are Tinsukhia and Sonai.

The list has also disappointed the minorities deeply. They have a sizable presence in the State. Senior leaders from the community complain that their grievances have been overlooked.
