By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. The Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation has again won HUDCO's award for outstanding performance in construction of houses under the weaker section housing programme, for the year 2000-2001, for the fifth consecutive year.

Disclosing this to presspersons, the Housing Minister, Mr. A. Prabhakar Reddy, said the corporation had constructed 13.75 lakh houses from 1996-1997 to 2000-2001 with HUDCO loan of Rs. 1007 crores and eversince the programme was launched in 1983, 38.17 lakh houses were constructed under rural and urban housing till March 31 this year.

The Minister said the performance showed that the State continued to be in the forefront in the implementation of the weaker section housing programme.

In a novel scheme, the Government would allot 12,000 houses to the self-help groups, at the rate of two houses to two members in each group. The selection would be done by the Mandal Development Officer. This scheme is in the four districts of Ranga Reddy, Mahbubnagar, Nellore and Chittoor.

Asked to comment on the resignation of Mr. K. Chandrasekhar Rao as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and as MLA and launching of a political party, the Minister said Mr. Rao's party would be yet another addition to the 20 to 30 political parties already existing in the State. He refused to make any further comments on the issue.
