American-Spanish endeavour in AIDS awareness

HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. The American and Spanish Red Cross have jointly come forward to help the Indian Red Cross Society, in carrying out awareness programme on HIV/ AIDS, in different states, including Andhra Pradesh.

This was stated by Dr. Vimala Ramalingam, Secretary-General of the Indian Red Cross Society, while addressing the members of the managing committee of the AP Red Cross Society at Raj Bhavan, here on Friday.

The other states where the American-Spanish assistance programme will be launched are Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Delhi, Manipur and Karnataka. A detailed action plan will be chalked out to be implemented next year.

She said the Spanish Red Cross awards committee has selected the Indian Red Cross Society for the gold medal this year for its distinguished service during the recent earthquake in Gujarat. She will receive the award at a function to be held at Teuli, 300 km. away from Madrid, on May 8, the Red Cross Day. An ambulance donated by the Spanish Red Cross, will be handed over to the AP Red Cross.

The managing committee met under the presidentship of the Governor, Dr. C. Rangarajan's wife, Dr. Haripriya Rangarajan, chairperson, AP Red Cross Society.
