12 infants of 'Sparsh' shifted to Sishu Vihar
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, APRIL 27. The Kukatpally police registered a case
against Mrs. Anita Sen, director of the orphanage, Precious
Moments, and wife of Additional Director-General of Police, Mr.
Swaranjit Sen, here on Friday.
Following a complaint lodged by Mrs. Udaya Lakshmi, project
director, Women and Child Welfare Department, the police charged
Mrs. Sen and her assistant, Ms. Sarita, under the Indian Penal
Code Section 175 (omission to produce documents), Section 188
(disobedience to orders promulgated by public servant), Section
342 (wrongful confinement), Section 420 (cheating), Section 468
(forgery for purpose of cheating) and Section 471 (using a forged
document as genuine), all read with the rules of G.O.Ms. No. 16.
However, no arrests have been made.
Earlier, Mrs. Sen issued a press release claiming that Precious
Moments ``never indulged in adoption of children'' as all
``infants and children have been placed for adoption by the ICSW
(Indian Council for Social Welfare) after due verification by
Government agencies.'' She also charged the Women and Child
Welfare officials of unauthorisedly whisking away the infants and
children from their premises on Thursday.
Mrs. Sen claimed that they had ``applied for Fit Persons
Institute'' twice in June, 1998, and again the next month. ``This
was granted in January, this year,'' she claimed. She also
appealed to the Government to return the children to the Precious
Moments.
Meanwhile, the shifting saga continued with the Women and Child
Welfare Department officials on Friday evening bringing 12 more
children to Sishu Vihar. These children, all aged below two
years, were moved from the premises of Sparsh, an orphanage
located at Somajiguda.
Six children out of the 61 who were shifted from Precious Moments
were admitted to the Niloufer Hospital on Friday. The doctors at
Niloufer Hospital described the condition of the children as
stable and said that they were kept under observation.
The Superintendent of Niloufer Hospital, Dr. N.C.K. Reddy, said
presently 20 children brought from various orphanages were
undergoing treatment at the hospital. ``Except for the condition
of two infants who were admitted last Saturday, others have
recovered,'' he said.
Meanwhile, the Konchavaram police in Gulbarga district of
Karnataka registered a case against the former film actress, Mrs.
Amala Akkineni, and others on charges of flouting the rules and
regulations in adoption of children and sending them abroad. She
is a honorary member for advisory council of St. Theresa Tender
Loving Care Home in the city which was inspected by the Central
Adoption Resource Agency members along with the Women and Child
Welfare on Thursday.
