'Alliance to keep Congress from power'
Guwahati, April 27. Alliance partners AGP and BJP today
announced that their tie-up was meant for the purpose of
preventing the Congress from coming to the power in the May 10
Assembly election.
"The main aim of our coming together was to prevent the corrupt
Congress to come to power," AGP President and Chief Minister
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and BJP Assam unit chief Rajen Gohain told
a joint press conference here.
The parties alleged that the Congress when in power had neglected
the needs of the State which resulted in its backwardness.
The leaders hoped that the alliance would come to power and
provide a stable Government that would work for restoration of
peace and development in the State.
When asked about the common minimum programme between the two
parties, Mahanta and Gohain said the modalities were being worked
out.
They said the alliance was the "call of the hour" as "we felt the
people wanted a stable government."
On the foreigners issue, Gohain favoured the introduction of
identity cards for voters which was also supported by Mahanta.
