Left parties to contest for 69 seats

Guwahati, April 27. The CPI, the CPI(M) and the Samajwadi Party will jointly contest the May 10 Assembly polls in 69 constituencies of Assam.

Of the 69 seats, the CPI would contest 21, the CPI(M) 22, and the SP 26 seats, CPI leader Pramod Gogoi told reporters here today. He said the combine along with their associate parties, the revolutionary Socialist Party and the Janata Dal(S), will compete in 110 seats.

He said the combine was holding seat-sharing discussions with the CPI(ML) and the ASDC too. He said the parties will extend support to candidates put up by the Left, Democratic and secular parties where they do not have candidates.

Gogoi also predicted that no party would win a majority and there would be a hung Assembly this time. When asked which party the combine would extend support to in such a case, he said only time would tell. He said the Left parties parted ways with the AGP after it allied with the Congress, primarily due to ideological differences.

Samajwadi Party leader Abdul Muhib Mazumder said the alliance will shorty announce a common-minimum-programme. He also unveiled the Samajwadi Party manifesto.
