TCS commissions Asia's largest eServer from IBM
By Our Corporate Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY 4. India's top software company, Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS) today commissioned the latest eServer from IBM,
thereby becoming the first organisation in the ASEAN and South
Asia region to adopt the latest technology in mainframe
computing.
The ceremonial login took place at the company's state-of-the-art
facility at Sholinganallur on the outskirts of Chennai. Mr.
Bernard Alter, U.S. Consul General, inaugurated the new eServer.
Earlier at a press conference, Mr. S. Mahalingam, Executive Vice
President, TCS, said with the latest installation of IBM's latest
zSeries eServer, the company's in-house mainframe capacity had
crossed the 1,000 MIPS (million instructions per second) mark.
He said the investment involved was Rs. 25 crores and TCS was
making significant investments in IBM mainframes from the early
Eighties and had carried out some large projects for Indian and
global customers such as Sega Intersettle, NSDL, Axa Sunlife,
American Express and IBM itself using IBM mainframes.
Mr. Mahalingam said TCS would work with IBM as business partner
to provide total solutions to customers in India. The joint
business plans were envisaged to leverage TCS's expertise as IT
solution provider together with IBM technology in identified
vertical segments. Mr. Abraham Thomas, MD & CEO, IBM India, said
IBM's strength as the technology leader and TCS's leadership in
system integration would offer the customers the best of IT
solutions for their business needs.
He said the U.S. slowdown would not affect IBM's business as lot
of offshore projects were taking place in India and TCS had a
fair amount of success in offshore work. ``We provide the
infrastructure where lot of work can be done in India'' he said.
